I am beautiful. I am smart. I am intelligent. These are the opening words to the affirmation that every girl in YWCA’s Young Women’s Leadership Corps (YWLC) recites weekly. YWCA Hartford Region is dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all. They help women and girls bridge educational, career and financial gaps and prepare them for life-long stability and economic security.
This impactful affirmation was shared with over 1200 attendees at YWCA’s In the Company Of Women Luncheon, sponsored by Hoffman Lexus. Attendees were shown firsthand how YWCA has impacted the lives of many women and girls and introduced to Keynote Speaker Angélique Kidjo.
Kidjo is a Grammy award-winning singer, activist, and humanitarian who fought her whole life for female equality. Growing up in Africa, Kidjo was surrounded by powerful female role models. At a time when female singers were ridiculed and labeled as prostitutes, her grandmother wouldn’t let her quit. “You can’t please everyone,” she told Kidjo. “Whatever you do to empower people, do it. Do what you love.” Kidjo’s love of singing started when her mother was in charge of a play, and Kidjo became the understudy when one of the main actors fell ill. Some of her earliest musical memories include listening to Jimi Hendrix albums and creating her own versions of some of her favorite songs.
