This time of year is referred to as the “most wonderful,” but did you know that it’s also one of the most dangerous? Every New Year’s, the United States sees a spike in the number of traffic deaths. According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, New Year’s Eve was the second most deadly holiday in 2014. Between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day that year, there were 973 drunk driving deaths nationwide. In fact, 48% of highway deaths on New Year’s Eve are alcohol-related.
This December, Hoffman Auto Group is partnering with Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) and their Tie One On For Safety campaign. A portion of every vehicle sold at all Hoffman Auto Group dealerships will be donated to MADD’s mission- your purchase makes a positive impact in your community. There are many companies coming together to keep our roads safe by offering sober ride services for you (and your vehicle)! In fact, Connecticut is one of only three states that has designated driver companies in every county! To find a designated driver service in your area, check out drinkinganddriving.org.
AmRide’s designated driver service will pick up you and your vehicle and get you home safely. AmRide drivers are screened and insured to drive your car. It’s easy to schedule through their app, available through Apple or Android. Rides must be scheduled at least 15 minutes in advance, and cost $25.00 plus about $2.75 per mile, depending on dates.
For our readers in Fairfield County, Dryver’s designated driver service will also come pick you and your car up and drive you both home safely. Dryver’s app allows for easy scheduling and payment, plus there’s no worry about picking up your car the next day! Dryver costs $25.00 plus $3.45 per mile.
iDriveYourCar is another service that offers sober rides in Connecticut. Rides can be booked through their website or over the phone. Rates vary, so make sure to visit them online!
All three of these services not only offer designated drivers, but personal drivers as well. These drivers will drop you off and pick you up in the comfort of your own vehicle. If you know ahead of time that you’ll be drinking, we encourage you to book a driver in advance for the whole evening. Prices can be found on their websites.
Wherever you’re headed in the Hartford Area, count on Lyft for rides in minutes. The Lyft app matches you with friendly local drivers at the tap of a button. Just request and go. After the ride, simply pay through your phone.
Uber and MADD have been working together since 2014 to promote safer roads and designated drivers. Studies show that the availability of Uber has made a difference:
This holiday season, #LeaveTheKeysAtHome and take an Uber to and from your holiday celebrations. Keep yourself, your friends and family, and countless others safe this holiday season by not drinking and driving.
