Since my last article, many of you experienced a fierce winter storm that caught many off guard….including the numerous power authorities throughout the region.  I would like to extend my condolences to those of you who were forced to endure days or weeks of power outages and to those of you who suffered damage to your homes or businesses.  I was in the Springfield/Enfield area myself the day after the storm delivering a generator to my Father in Law and saw the damage first hand.  It was staggering and I know many of you were impacted, I hope by now all of you have recovered.  After this article, we will jump right into winter weather driving.  In light of the storm, it feels a bit late for that! Wet Weather Driving – Part Two

So in the last article, we learned about the technical aspects of how a tire grips the road surface and how wet weather adversely affects tire grip. However, wet weather driving usually takes away the audible clue that we are approaching or have exceeded the grip limit of the tires as in most cases, tires will not “squeal” in wet weather.  This is not completely true but the faint noise made by a tire who’s grip has been exceeded in wet weather is usually drowned out by engine noise and other road noise associated with driving in the rain.  So how can we be certain when we are approaching the grip of the tires in wet weather?  Well, there is no simple answer to that.  It all comes down to how much grip the road surface has.  Certainly factors such as how hard it is raining and the amount of standing water on the road play a big role.  Other less obvious factors include what the road is paved with (asphalt or concrete), lines and traffic markings painted on the road surface and the age of the road surface itself to name a few.
