A Showroom In Your Sitting Room; How Bad Are American Drivers?; Concept Cars for 2011: The Good, The Bad, The Ugly

Good morning ladies and gentleman, and welcome to the inaugural posting of On The Top Spot, your guide to everything you didn’t need to know about the automotive world!  It’s a beautiful day here in East Hartford, and we have a great lineup of news stories for you to enjoy.

Today, we’re taking a look at some of the best – and worst – concept cars of 2010, thanks to Automotive News; we’ll talk about just how bad American drivers are; and we’ll show you a house ideal for a serious car enthusiast.

Concept Cars of 2010

Audi E-Tron

Audi isn’t looking to jump on the EV bandwagon – they’re looking to totally redesign it.

Auto News says this little two-door electric sports car has a 155 mile range and made from aluminum and carbon fiber.  Check out the article on the Auto News website to find out how the car stacks up to the current Audi line-up, and wether or not Audi will actually put this car into production.

Porsche 918 Spyder Hybrid

James Dean would have loved this one!

With over 700 HP, this Porsche is likely to help convince a lot of drivers that hybrids aren’t just for Grandma anymore.  Although it will become a production vehicle one day, the future is still a little uncertain for this sports car, according to Auto News.  Check out their website for details about the Porsche hybrid’s four (yes, four) engines.

Nissan Ellure

It may not become a production vehicle, but you’ll be seeing more of this car in future changes to Nissan‘s current line-up.

You can definitely expect to see big things from Nissan in the future.  With the Leaf about to hit stores in the US, and vehicles like the Juke already on the roads, Nissan is poised to be a big name in the future of automobiles.  Auto News doesn’t think you’ll see this exact vehicle on the road – but you mind find details of it in new Altima, Sentra or Maxima models.

Toyota Swagger Wagon

No really...It's called "The Swagger Wagon."

You’ll never see this on the road, but hey, a soccer mom can dream, can’t they?  This sweet ride comes with hide-away tables, a 23-inch monitor and Brazillian hardwood floors.  Check out Auto News for a complete list of over-the-top amenities.

Study Finds One in Five Licensed Americans Cannot Pass Drivers Test

GMAC Insurance recently held their annual National Driver’s Test survey, and the results are a little scary, according to WFSB.com.  One in five Americans (approximately 38 million drivers) would fail a written driving test.

The insurance company has been polling Americans for the last six years, polling more than 5,000 drivers across all 50 states.  The questions that proved the hardest?  How much distance there should be between cars traveling on the highway, what to do at a yellow light and how fast above the speed limit you’re allowed to travel (trick question).

Also covered in the poll were questions about distracted driving.  While only five percent of participants admitted to texting while driving, a whopping 25% admitted to engaging in distracting behaviors behind the wheel.  Some examples are putting on make-up, using an iPod and eating.

The article continues on to further discuss the findings of the poll, and what that means for American drivers in the future.  Click here for the entire article at WFSB.com.

The Perfect Home For Car Collectors

Picture it:  You roll out of bed, saunter into your kitchen and brew a nice cup of joe.  You flick on the TV, settle into your Porsche 911 Turbo with the remote, and start surfin’ (cruisin’?) the stations.  Wait… a Porsche 911 Turbo?  As your couch?

Hey, did you know there's a car in your house?

If you lived, here that’s exactly what you’d do.  Designboom.com, a blog dedicated to industrial design, recently blogged about a 2,000 sq. foot home that had only two design requirements: that the house somehow incorporate a live tree, and that it include a nine car garage.

The architect did one better: he attached the nine car garage to the house…and also built a lift into the open floor plan.  You know, so the owner of the house could decorate using one of his nine Lamborghinis.

To check out photos of the garage and the actual lift itself, check out the website here.
